knowledge

General Knowledge Mental Exercise

Why not be part of a friendly, interactive and social group exercising their brains by challenging memory, improving word power and increasing general knowledge on a wide range of topics using a crossword format. The group interacts using their combined knowledge and each answer gives a toehold on the others. A dictionary, thesaurus and the Internet are utilised.
To be knowledgeable is not a requirement as the class is a group activity and uses reference sources.

Course Code: 21LEC415
Venue: Currumundi Community Hall, Corner Currumundi Road and Ilay Street
Tutor: Ian Cran
Day and Time: Wednesday 10.15am – 12.15pm

literature

Reconnecting with Australian Literature

This interactive course touches lightly on the history of Australian literature from colonial times to the present. Along with the consideration of well-known poets such as Paterson and Lawson, some lesser known and/or more subversive writers will be encountered. We will also consider the role of the historical context of the texts studied through the application of new historicism and other postmodern literary theories. Although this sounds a bit heavy, the object is also to form new friendships and to have fun.

Course Code : 21LIT300
Venue: U3A Lecture Room Building B USC Sippy Downs
Tutor: Elizabeth Woolaston
Day and Time: Thursday 10.00 – 11.30am

accounting

Understanding Accounting

Enjoy group discussion and activities which examine how to:
– understand the basic nature of accounting, the underlying concepts (assets, liabilities, shareholders’ funds, revenues and expenses, cash inflows and cash outflows) and the key accounting principles and rules
– understand the differences between cash and accrual accounting
– construct straightforward profit and loss statements and balance sheets
– analyse and interpret accounting reports to assess performance and financial strength
– read and better understand financial news articles about companies in the media
– understand the cash flow cycle and ways to manage and improve cash flows
– appreciate the principles of constructing cash budgets
– appreciate the nature of different types of costs incurred in running a business and understand how to manage those costs and how to set prices to achieve targeted outcomes (such as breakeven points).
