President’s Report – November 2021
As U3A classes close for 2021, there’s time to reflect on the year that was…
I trust that you have had a busy and enjoyable year with your studies. I certainly have, undertaking several new courses that have been both interesting and mentally challenging, ranging from ‘Art for All’ and ‘Australian Literature’ to the ‘History of Medicine’!
If you have any interesting snippets to share about this year’s classes, or any thanks you’d like to make, now’s the time to send them in to us. Our tutors give up so much of their time, their energy, their enthusiasm, to give freely to us – but a lovely warm “Thank you” goes a long way to make them feel it was worthwhile.
A big thank you to our Project Officer Karen Martin (pictured left) for all her work this year with the IAGEWELL Expo and the Strategic Plan Review. Karen is heading over to Western Australia for a family Christmas, but she will be back in the new year volunteering her best work in support of projects we undertake in 2022.
Christmas, a time to renew family ties…
As we wind down the year, now is the time to think about and plan for Christmas and the festive season. Hopefully many of you will be able to reconnect with loved ones over the break. Some of you will be travelling thousands of kilometers to see your families again. Travel safe, and return in the New Year refreshed and ready to enjoy your many activities with U3A Sunshine Coast.
Open Day 2022 Saturday January 15th 9am to 12noon
Please note the date for our annual U3A Open Day on Saturday January 15th at the USC Innovation Centre. This opportunity to meet up in person with some of the tutors is always interesting, enjoyable and informative. And the U3A Office will be open if you need assistance with paying your membership or course fees!
Apart from a coffee van on site, we will also have some entertainment provided by Pamela Woodrow’s Tap Dancers (pictured above at the I Age Well Expo) who will perform at 9.30am and Lorraine Quinn’s Ukulele Players at 10.30am.
Also, the USC golf buggy will be available to transport people from the Innovation Centre to the U3A Office, and return (pictured).
To comply with current COVID requirements for total numbers in the venue, both current and potential members are invited to choose a time to attend, at either 9am or 10am or 11am and register their choice with the secretary: email@example.com.
Keep an eye out for our advertisement promoting U3A to the wider community in December’s Your Time magazine, and there’ll be a feature article in January’s edition.
Tutors interested in promoting their course to both members and the wider community are invited to run an exhibition booth at the Innovation Centre on January 15th from 9am to 12noon. Please book your exhibition booth with Vice-President/Equipment Officer John St. Smith: firstname.lastname@example.org
A reminder about COVID 19…
We are so very fortunate that Queensland, just about alone in the whole world, has been kept safe from the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic. We have been given enough time to receive our vaccinations to help us to weather the storm still to come, that will particularly target our demographic. Your Management Committee has been waiting on both Queensland and local government to announce COVID precautions once the borders reopen – and yes, these are pretty stringent. The last thing we want to do is to become some dictatorial organisation giving our members life orders, yet it seems inevitable that we will have to comply with public health requirements regarding attending classes. And it seems only fair that our voluntary tutors themselves have the right to stay safe. Please, do ensure that you have received both vaccinations in time for the New Year with U3A.
If you have anyone in mind, a favourite long time tutor or volunteer, whom you believe has contributed outstanding service to the organization, you have until February 2022 to submit a nomination form to recognize a worthy candidate as a Life Member. Life Members so far are Ian R. Wilson, Jim Hales, John D. Cooper, Patricia Barry, Myra Timmerman, Ann Main and Ernie Bennett. Life Member Mara Miller sadly passed away earlier this year.
Nomination forms, requiring a mover, seconder and a summary of the member’s role and contribution, are available from our office, and on our U3A website.
Enjoy your Christmas holiday!
I hope that you will find the time to relax over your Christmas holiday break, enjoy meeting up with family again, and love and care for each other, and I look forward to seeing many of you at our COVID-safe Open Day on Saturday January 15th 2022,
U3A Sunshine Coast
