U3A Sunshine Coast is offering about 150 classes this year, and while number of our classes and activity groups are already full there are still a number of interesting classes with limited vacancies. Below is a selection of new courses that have vacancies that give members the opportunity to join and become involved with a like-minded people.

U3A Tutor and Course Coordinator
Belly Dance Fitness
This is a beginner’s class where students will learn basic belly dance moves, steps and isolations. You will be taught easy dance routines which are beneficial for all parts of the body together with hand, foot and brain co-ordination. Gain flexibility whilst having fun, perfect for healthy ageing.
Excel Advanced Spreadsheets
Location: Sippy Downs
This course is designed for people with reasonable experience of Excel spreadsheets, who wish to build their knowledge by learning about some of its more advanced features. It is a follow-on from the basic Excel Spreadsheets course. The course will assume students already understand the basics of Excel, and hence are not suitable for those quite new to Excel. The course format is hands-on, including plenty of practical exercises.
The Feldenkrais method is an educational approach to improving human movement. The method uses movement to teach awareness and skilful body awareness in turn can help improve activities such as walking, swimming, golf as well as the movements of everyday life. It is frequently old unhelpful habits which restrict ease; the method offers opportunities to realign the body to find different and more efficient movement patterns.
Introduction to GNU Image Manipulation
Location: Sippy Downs
Quality photo enhancement software is not normally free. One exception is the GNU Image Manipulation Program called GIMP. This program is similar to Photoshop and as such, has a steep learning curve. Good basic computer skills are essential.
Japanese Beginners: A Taster Course
A beginner’s course on Japanese language, courtesies and culture. You will be introduced to the language and from the first lesson, have the rudiments of introducing yourself. During the rest of the course you will be practising asking and answering questions and speaking in Japanese. You will have exposure to the alphabets and how to continue learning them independently.
Self Editing a Novel, Novella, Memoir
Location: Sippy Downs
This course will provide you with some of the tools to “craft your draft”. It will incorporate methods of tightening the plot, refining characters, strengthening the authorial voice as well as recognising and excising unnecessary words, phrases and paragraphs. The course will be highly practical with class exercises to demonstrate the theory and allow you to apply elements to hone your own work.
The History of Medicine
The history of medicine, and in particular the history of infectious disease, is full of fascinating stories. This course looks at some of those stories and the important events and people involved. It will explore how these situations have impacted our understanding of health and ill-health and the consequences for us today.
Tread the Boards, Musical Theatre
Acting, singing, and dancing are almost as old as humanity itself. Performing plays with music is a fun and fulfilling way to entertain, let off steam and express our creative side. It involves developing a great sense of timing, working as a productive team and ‘being in the moment’. If this sounds like something that you’d like to get involved with, join tutors BarBaRa Brickland and Ralph Lycett Tyrrell in exciting, interesting workshops to engage your inner thespian. Male participants would be warmly welcomed.
Ukulele, Intermediate to Advanced
This class will focus on introduction to music theory: Chromatic scale, keys and changing key, chord construction, reading tabs and fingerpicking. Learn new rhythms, chords, positions and interesting songs to play. A commitment to regular attendance and practice will make for a rewarding class.
